Marina earned her Biotechnology Aptitude and Competency Exam (BACE) credential in her sophomore year at Sebastian River High School where she is enrolled in its Biotechnology program. Marina is entering into her senior year of high school.

Since earning her BACE credential, Marina participated in the Junior Scientist Fellows Program, offered through a partnership between the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and Florida Atlantic University. She credits her biotechnology courses and BACE credential with helping prepare her for the research she conducted as a fellow.

> Job Description:

As a fellow, Marina worked with other high school students on a research project led by a Harbor Branch scientist that studied how water quality and culverts affect mangrove invertebrates in the Coastal Oaks Preserve. She conducted field work in the Indian River Lagoon and helped identify invertebrates in the lab. At the end of the program, Marina presented the group’s research findings at a symposium alongside college students and other Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute research teams.

Marina shared that the best part of participating in the Junior Scientist Fellows Program was conducting a research project focused on bettering the Indian River Lagoon.
