Trent earned his Biotechnology Aptitude and Competency Exam (BACE) credential in 2017 at Pace High School before attending Mississippi State University (MSU). Trent credits the BACE credential for helping him secure a research position in a pathogenic microbiology laboratory at MSU. Trent later completed a six-month co-op as a quality control technician at Boehringer Ingelheim, where he worked in both the Immunology and Bacteriology departments testing vaccines for quality, efficacy, and safety. Now in his final year at MSU, Trent is studying beneficial soil fungus for agricultural ecosystems in the chemistry department. He plans to attend graduate school and continue his career in the biotechnology industry.

Trent believes earning his BACE credential made him stand out among other students and applicants. The BACE enabled him to secure his first research position as a college freshman, working alongside upperclassmen and graduate students. The BACE also demonstrated his commitment to the field of biotechnology and his willingness to put in the work needed to launch his career. Overall, earning the BACE credential gave him a strong head start and opened the door to valuable opportunities.

> Job Description:

While working in the Immunology department at Boehringer Ingelheim, Trent performed serological assays such as Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assays (ELISAs) to test experimental, in-process, and finished vaccines to assess vaccine potency. While working in the Bacteriology department, Trent tested bacterial vaccines for potency and efficacy and conducted contaminant testing, including microbial water analysis, endotoxin testing, and microbial identification. Throughout his term, he regularly analyzed data and supported the assay development team in developing new techniques. His experiences provided him with exposure to a highly regulated industry and a deeper understanding of the regulatory agencies that govern it.
