> About:

Matthew is a senior at the University of Florida (UF) majoring in Biology with a specialization in Biotechnology and a minor in Entomology. He participated in the Bioscience Technology Program at Oviedo High School where he earned his Biotechnology Aptitude and Competency Exam (BACE) credential during his senior year.

After earning the BACE, Matthew had the opportunity to work in a variety of biotechnology laboratories at UF and completed an internship at Walt Disney World focused on entomology and the future of agriculture. The BACE credential reinforced the importance of research and inspired him to encourage other students to engage in research through the Center for Undergraduate Research at UF.

> BACE and Career Path:

While considering a college major, Matthew relied heavily on the experience he gained while preparing for the BACE credential, which helped guide his interest toward a career in Biotechnology. Earning the BACE also helped launch him into research and strengthened his competitiveness when applying for laboratory positions as an undergraduate. The training associated with the exam emphasized the value of early research experience. He currently serves on the executive board of the UF Center for Undergraduate Research Board of Students as Director of External Affairs, where he works to increase undergraduate participation in research. Matthew plans to continue pursuing research in graduate school and as a career.

> Job Description:

Matthew works for the Blueberry Breeding Program at the University of Florida. His work includes molecular techniques such as extracting DNA from plant tissue, amplifying DNA using PCR, analyzing DNA through gel electrophoresis, and assisting with genetic transformation experiments. Matthew also focuses on more macroscopic work, including field sampling and introducing plants into tissue culture. One project he contributed to examined lighting conditions for the Southern Highbush Blueberry in tissue culture.

> Best Thing About The Job:

Matthew’s favorite part of his job is using advanced techniques to expand scientific knowledge at both the macroscopic and microscopic levels, as well as learning from experienced scientists.
